Betty Rosalyn Harper Garner of Derwood, MD died on Monday June 17, 2019. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, William David Garner. Shewas the loving mother of Rachelle Garner Green (David) and David Clinton Garner (Katherine) and the proud grandmother of Andrew, Scott, Alexandra (Jhony), Emma and William, and great grandmother of Dean and Sam.

Betty was born in Humboldt, TN on July 24, 1930 to Finus and Nell Harper. Later, her family moved to Trenton, TN.  She received her Bachelor’s degree from Blue Mountain College in Mississippi and then her Master’s in Chemistry from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN.After graduating in 1954, she married William David Garner (Bill) of Bristow, OK. Bill was a U.S. Navy officer and they enjoyed a variety of tours of duty both at home and abroad, retiring in 1976 and staying put in Derwood, MD. She worked as a teacher in various schools, and as a math specialist at her children’s elementary school helping children get beyond their math anxiety. She later worked as the secretary for the Montgomery Baptist Association.  She was an active member of her church, Seven Locks Baptist, working to establish a multimedia library there and where she was also known for her cooking skills and fabulous desserts having come from a long line of great southern cooks. She was always doing and always eager to learn new things, including joining a club for stock investing in her 60s.  She was generous with her time and her talents, and continually demonstrated that it is more blessed to give than to receive.

A memorial service will be held at Seven Locks Baptist, 11845 Seven Locks Road, Potomac, Maryland, on Tuesday, July 9 at 3 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Seven Locks Baptist Church or the United States Navy Memorial. At a later date, her remains will be placed beside her husband’s at Arlington National Cemetery.
