Audrey Bratman Chereskin 12/31/1922 - 12/06/2019
Audrey (nee Audrey Claire Bratman) passed away on Monday, December 6th, 2019, 25 days short of her 97th birthday.
Audrey was born to the late Sam and Dora Bratman in Baltimore, Maryland. She spent two years at Goucher College, and then transferred to and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1943, with a BA in literature, and was married for 58 years to her best friend and soul mate, Dr. Frank M. Chereskin. They met while he was in dental school in Baltimore. They lived briefly in West Springfield, Massachusetts, and then Springfield, before spending three years in Panama City, Florida, while Frank was a Captain (as a dentist) in the Air Force at Tyndall Air Force Base (1953-55). They returned to Springfield until 1959, and then moved to Longmeadow, Massachusetts, where they lived until they retired in 1981, when they moved to south Florida.
Audrey raised three daughters, and returned to graduate school at the University of Connecticut, where she earned her master’s degree in Social Work in 1965. She worked for Child Protective Services for the state of Massachusetts in the greater Springfield area. She also worked on numerous volunteer activities.
Following their retirement in the early 1980’s, Audrey and Frank lived in Boynton Beach, West Palm Beach, and then South Palm Beach, Florida, while still returning to Stockbridge, Massachusetts each summer. They made several lengthy trips to Europe, the Caribbean, and Israel. In Israel, while Frank worked as a dentist with Palestinian children, Audrey worked in a school clinic for preschool children with handicaps.
Audrey loved travel, swing music, playing golf and bridge, as well as the cultural arts, especially classical music. She had a special connection to Tanglewood, Massachusetts and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She worked as a volunteer usher at Tanglewood for many years.
Following Frank’s passing in 2002, Audrey spent time in Sharon, Massachusetts with her grandchildren, prior to relocating to Asbury Village in Gaithersburg, Maryland, where she lived for many years. She made wonderful friends playing bridge several times a week, enjoying local concerts and lectures, and volunteering as a hostess for the Edwards-Fisher building, as a member of the Medical Task Force Committee, and as a member of the Keese School Scholarship Committee.
Audrey leaves her brother, Allan Bratman, of Palm Beach, Florida, and three loving daughters: Carol Glaser of Newport, Rhode Island, Ellen Klosson (Peter Boyd) of Darnestown, Maryland, and Roberta (Barry) Kirshner of Sharon, Massachusetts. Audrey also leaves five grandchildren (Jill, Jennifer, Emily, Laura, and Martin), and nine great-grandchildren.
Audrey will be interred next to her husband, Frank, at the South Florida National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Civil Liberties Union (www.aclu.org) or to Friends of Tanglewood (www.bso.org).
A memorial service will be held at Asbury Village December 28, 2019, 3:00-5:00 p.m. 409 Russell Avenue, Gaithersburg, Maryland 20877. Rosborough Building, Rooms B and C. (GPS address: 301 Russell Avenue, Gaithersburg, Maryland 20877.)
